Why I Started The Gallerist's Notebook

Over the years, I've worn a lot of different hats.

I've spent more than 25 years in marketing, helping for profit and nonprofit organizations communicate their stories and connect with the right audiences. For the past 12 years, I've experienced the art world from multiple perspectives—as an artist, gallerist, curator, and gallery owner. Through Art on Main, I've worked alongside many artists, reviewing portfolios, curating exhibitions, and having countless conversations about building a successful creative career.

Being a marketer, artist, curator and a gallery owner has given me a unique perspective on the challenges artists face—not just in creating meaningful work, but in presenting it professionally and connecting with the people who will value it most.

What I've noticed is this:

Most artists don't struggle because they lack talent.

They struggle because no one ever taught them the business side of being an artist.

They've learned how to paint, sculpt, photograph, weave, or create beautiful work—but many have never been shown how to write an artist bio, build a website, approach a gallery, grow an email list, or market themselves in a way that feels authentic.

Those are the questions I hear almost every day.

"How do I approach a gallery?"

"Can you look at my website?"

"What should I post on social media?"

"How do I write an artist statement?"

"Where do I even start?"

After answering those questions over and over again, I realized something.

The advice shouldn't live only in conversations inside the gallery.

It should be available to every artist who needs it.

That's why I created The Gallerist's Notebook.

It's a place where I can share the practical advice, marketing strategies, and gallery insights I've gathered throughout my career—along with the lessons I've learned as an artist myself.

My goal isn't to tell you there's only one path to success.

Every artist's journey is different.

Instead, I want to give you tools that help you present your work professionally, tell your story with confidence, and connect with the people who will value what you create.

Some of those tools are free.

Others are more in-depth guides, one-on-one strategy sessions, or custom artist websites.

But they all have the same purpose:

To help artists spend less time wondering what to do next—and more time creating.

If there's one thing I hope you discover here, it's this:

Marketing doesn't have to feel overwhelming.

It doesn't have to feel salesy.

And it doesn't have to take you away from your art.

When approached thoughtfully, marketing becomes another way of sharing your work, your story, and your perspective with the world.

I'm so glad you're here, and I hope The Gallerist's Notebook becomes a trusted companion throughout your creative journey.

Warmly,

Andrea Lamarsaude
